Many students want to enhance their career prospects or start afresh in a new field of work. Higher education can help with both aspects, but it is crucial to thoroughly research career choices - start setting some goals early on and then identify suitable pathways. It is far better to be proactive than to either fall off the end of your course with no idea what to do! Or indeed, pursue a particular direction, only to find you don't get on with it! Your local adult guidance service will be able to help - in Cornwall and Devon, this is the GO4 partnership. They can offer ideas and expert guidance through a variety of means for example an interview or with the help of career software designed for adults to help you plan your pathway. Be prepared to review plans though! You will find that your priorities change and develop over time. If you are one of the lucky ones who has a clear idea about your future direction, it is still a good idea to consult a Careers Adviser ¨C they may have some useful information and suggestions that you hadn't thought of. Where you have identified a course of study but are unsure about where it leads, have a look at what has happened to previous graduates by asking to see the 'First Destinations Survey'. This student survey is undertaken by all universities six months after graduation. The University of Plymouth¡¯s first destination statistics are published on our Careers Service web pages under ¡®What do Graduates do?¡¯ When you look at it however, do bear in mind that the survey is conducted just six months after graduation and that it doesn¡¯t necessarily have a 100% response. To find out more on a national level, the Prospects website is an excellent resource. As well as destination statistics, it shows you how you can use your qualification in the more general sense as well as providing career suggestions for different subject areas at degree level. If your chosen course doesn't appear to relate to a specific occupational area remember that many employers do not ask for specific degree courses. They seek individuals who possess a degree or similar and can demonstrate that they are experienced in the world of work and have the relevant skills to succeed. One final point regarding careers. Many mature students are restricted to one geographical area due to domestic commitments, which can impose certain restrictions. Career guidance professionals will be able to provide you with realistic and informed advice with respect to employment trends in your area.
